Recordings from Australia’s tropical north
Feb 21st, 2008 by andrew skeoch
In the spring of last year, we spent 6 weeks in the tropical north of Queensland, travelling to country known as The Gulf Savannah.
A highlight was Lawn Hill National Park in the far north west of the state. It is an oasis of water and wildlife in an otherwise dry landscape. Here can be found many rare northern species, and the morning birdsong was just wonderful. We spent 5 mornings there, and we’ve recently published the album ‘On the Banks of the Emerald River’ from these recordings.
So you can experience a spring morning at Lawn Hill by downloading the album from our shop. Read more about the album here, or listen to the audio sample.
Of course there was much more we recorded and photographed during those weeks, and we anticipate being able to tell you about further album releases later in the year. In the meantime, here are two short recordings from the tropical north;
1. An Olive-backed Oriole giving a virtuoso display of imitating. You can hear him copying a Cockatiel, White-browed Woodswallow, Major Mitchell Cockatoo, Mulga Parrot, Cuckoo-Shrike and several raptor species.
2. An excerpt from a beautiful morning near Hughenden. We plan to make this entire recording available soon. In the meantime, this is a small preview.
