Hi Vivienne,
Like the colonials bribing indigenous tribes with trinkets eh?
It is intriguing behaviour. If it was a bowerbird doing this you could readily conclude it is purposeful. A Magpie? I don't know. I've never seen them do anything like this, but they are highly intelligent and adaptive creatures. Maybe this one just liked bling!

Hi Sarah and Andrew, i have been feeding a family of magpies for three years, they sing songs for me i am sure to say thank you for the mince! i was wondering though, have you ever heard of, or is it possible that magpies will bring "gifts" to you? this morning i went out to feed the family and one od the maggies had landed on the guttering, verly close to the doorway and when he saw me, dropped a largish silver object. i went to inspect what maggie had dropped and it was a piece of trangular shaped tin. i have seen them lately with pieces of string and branches and things for their nests, but not this type of object. what do you think? thanks, v.
reply: vivienne@nesmc.com.au if you are able to.

[...] Det har ikke regnet endnu, men det går fint an, at nyde dagen alligevel. Det er ikke dårligt, at vågne ved lyden i Magpierne. http://www.listeningearth.com.au/blog/a-madrigal-of-magpies [...]
