Vanuatu - Pacific Rainforest

    Field Notes

    Several of the species on this recording are endemic to Vanuatu, and are only found in healthy remnant forests. Hence caring management of rainforest remnants is essential to survival of these species. See here for more about Loru Rainforest Reserve.

    Species to be heard (endemics in bold):

    Southern Shrikebill: long drawn out whistle, heard throughout the recording, but particularly in the 5 minutes. This is varied with a more textured whistle, such as at 3.36, 3.46...

    Red Jungle Fowl (related to the domestic chicken, but here wild): In background throughout, particularly first 5 minutes or so.

    Buff-bellied Monarch: animated chatter heard occasionally throughout, notably in foreground at 2.46-3.34...

    Tanna Fruit-dove: soft 2-note "coo"; 0.35-0.45

    Pacific Imperial Pigeon: a lovely rising and falling, burred, "prrrroooo"; 5.41, 5.57, 6.06, 6.42, 6.54... Also resonant rising and falling "whoooo": 13.44, 14.03, 14.15...

    Red-bellied Fruit-dove: A resonant accelerating series of "whooo, whooo, whooos..."; 5.49, 6.20, 7.40... 12.55... 15.01...

    Mackinlay's Fruit-dove: Two-note call, with first syllable higher, heard at 3.07, 3.31, 3.49...

    Streaked Fantail: Throughout after about 2.00. Particularly close calls at 5.22, 5.30, 5.59, 6.03... along with 'sneezy' in between calls characteristic of Fantails.

    Dark Brown Honeyeater: quick series of "Tchoo, tchoo, tchoo" calls; background at 3.59-4.10

    Cardinal Myzomela: melodic jingling song in far background 7.53-8.16 (not sure of this identification)

    Golden Whistler: Various musical calls from around 11.00, notably whipping upslurs and rich song from 14.00 to 15.00... In background throughout remainder of track.

    New Caledonian Flycatcher: characteristic Flycatcher "tooee, tooee, tooee..." at 12.10, 12.30, 12.33, 12.40 & 12.43

    Collared Kingfisher: high-pitched "keck, keck, keck...", series of calls heard in background at around 4.20-5.14, more strident "keck, keck, keck..." in background; 16.17- 17.03 and trilled calls at 19.01-19.18.

    Rainbow Lorikeet; Brittle, metallic shrieks; one flies over the forest canopy calling at 16.58

    New Hebrides Scrubfowl: Cackling alarm call; 18.45
